Apparel reviews of CW-X Women's Insulator Stabilyx Running TightsCustomer Review: Worth the price for the recovery; Excellent support Rating: 5 Stars
I had seen these in athletic magazines, and couldn't decide if they were worth the purchase. I remember being able to run in anything (and without being wired for sound...i.e. forerunner, nike+) and so i'm fairly critical of new running "technology". However, I've gotten older, and have learned that most advances have been helpful with my training and/or racing. This falls into both categories.
They are tight...they are a challenge to get on. Follow the directions, and it can be done, though. Also, I was worried about the color...the grey/black/blue were the ones on sale, so I purchased those (hey, it's not a fashion show!). The color is very dark, and it was not very obvious that they were different colors. In race photos, depending on the light, I can see the criss-crossing pattern of the support bands, but in person, it's not as obvious. I was afraid that they would over-accentuate my non-distance runner body...no matter how fit, I'm never the tall (ha!) thin runner. They didn't, and even if they did, I think I would still wear them...they're that good!
I recently ran the Goofy challenge, but I am by no means someone who runs easily or super-fast...I work really hard to do what I see other people (also working hard, I know) do in 1/2 the time. So, I knew I'd be out there at least 2x as long as the marathon winners. I had three concerns. First, having only done 1/2 marathons, and knowing how tired I was that day...how was I going to run a full marathon 24 hours after running a half? Second, having never done a marathon...was I going to be able to walk around Disney after running one? Finally...I was training in New England (where it was freezing) and didn't want to have these be too hot to run in Florida, after having trained in them up here.
I felt that these would help, so I purchased them. I used them on my 20 mile training run, and immediately felt the difference. I have suffered from knee pain (due to a weird stride, my patella tracks a bit off to the side despite inserts) and hip pain for nearly 20 years of distance running. After the 20 miler, I did not have the knee pain I had become accustomed to. I did do the ice bath as I always do, so I'm sure that helped, but it was noticeable better, and I'm sure these helped.
As for the Goofy challenge...well, I did finish and I did walk around Disney. I know these helped. I was physically and mentally tired after the races, but my legs did not hurt at all. Not wearing compression socks, I was nervous about my feet swelling, but they did not. The knee support and extensive hip/back/ab support that I gained (they fit high on my 5'3" frame, so they come up high and provide support) helped me survive with only some biofreeze and advil/tylenol for the first day.
Finally...These worked beautifully in sub-freezing temps (it was about 10-15 degrees on my 20 miler) and they did a good job blocking the wind (which is more than I can say for the jacket I had on...It was a very cold day, but my legs were all set!) I'm not sure how they would have been if it was 80 degrees in Florida, but having checked the weather and having heard that last year's marathon was freezing, I decided to try these for the race. It started in the 40's and finished in the 60's (I told you I was slow!!) and these were perfect. They kept me warm at the start, wicked away sweat as I went along, and I never felt overheated at any point.
Description of CW-X Women's Insulator Stabilyx Running TightsThis insulated Stablyx Tight works to support key muscle groups in you lower body. The supportive Conditioning Web provides targeted support to major leg muscle groups, lower back, abs, and knee joints. This significantly reduces muscle fatigue and improves performance. The Auto Sensor fabric regulates body temperature and wicks perspiration away from your skin. Works great as a supportive high performance primary layer or as an outer layer depending upon temperature and conditions. The Insulator Stabilyx Tights from CW-X use WarmStretch temperature-regulation fabric to maintain a constant comfortable surface temperature in a variety of conditions--perfect for the cold weather athlete. The patented CW-X Support Web bands together the muscles and ligaments of the lower leg to stabilize the knee and reduce vibration for increased efficiency. The CW-X Support Web also harnesses the midsection, supporting the lower abdominals, hips and back to channel power through the core. Variable compression facilitates circulation during and after activity, minimizing lactic acid build-up so that you can be active longer and recover faster. The flat seam construction eliminates abrasions, increases comfort, and enhances fit. Other features include abdominal and back panels for extra support, reflective "flash" and logo for extra visibility at night, a key pocket, and double-reinforced waistband with flat-draw cord. Targeted Support The patented CW-X Support Web technology mimics kinesiology-taping techniques that trainers apply to injured muscles. When this technology is applied to muscles and joints it creates an exoskeletal support system that improves biomechanics during motion. The CW-X Support Web provides Targeted Support to key areas, decreasing muscle oscillation and focusing power so your muscles work more efficiently. Variable compression along the web facilitates circulation, minimizing lactic acid build-up and muscle soreness, so you can be active longer and recover faster.
