Apparel reviews of StoAway by CamelBakCustomer Review: Great, except for one issue Rating: 4 Stars
I had a bladder for a Swiss Gear backpack and it broke-it wasn't well made anyway. So I decided since I bike a lot during the year (12+ mi and that's just commuting, not recreational) that it would be a worthwhile purchase.
Well I looked at the unBottle series. Nice, but not quite what I was looking for. The StoAway seemed more like what I needed, since it had some insulation on the tube.
Quality: The bladder is nice and solid. Thick material. As is the hose and the mouthpiece as well as the bite guard. The actual "bag" is pretty well made as well.
There's a piece which is difficult to see in the photos, but it allows you to grip part of the StoAway just below the opening so you can fill it all the way. I think that was a nice adition and I Wasn't even aware it was there to begin with!
Everything feels nice, sturdy and yes, you can remove the bladder to clean it and the "bag" separately.
Use: My experience so far is pretty good. I threw the StoAway (no, not literally) into the bottle compartment of my Timbuk2 custom Swig, wrapping the top strap of the StoAway around the loop on top of my bag, thus securing it. For added security , I used a shoelace (which wasn't included, unfortunately but not big deal) to made sure it wasn't going anywhere when riding.
The water stays nice and cold even 2 hours (maybe longer but I haven't yet tried) after filling and the water in the tube is a little warmer, but not very much.
Really, the StoAway was all I could ask for.
The only issues I had was no coradage/lacing, etc. to use to attach to another bag. A minor issue at best.
Its bulky, also. a bit too bulky for most people who don't need a lot of water often. If you hike, backpack, ski, or do another sport which would require hydration but not allow you to reach for a bottle or if you prefer this, then its a sacrifice you've probably made or are willing to.
But what really made me give it four stars was this: (and yes, this is my fault but it's my review so there) if you pull the tubing, pull from anywhere but the mouth piece. It is sturdy, but it will easily attach. For cleaning purposes this is fantastic. Seriously, I can clean everywhere in this thing and made it like new pretty easily. But when you're on a bike or some such and you pull to get some water, only to have the thing come off in your hands and have water on you..
Well it was a hot day so I'm not complaining too much. Overall, I'd say this is your hydration system if you need something that can carry a decent amount of fluids and will fit in a good sized bag if not attach to the exterior.
