Apparel reviews of The Oilskin DroverCustomer Review: Does the same as those more expensive brands Rating: 5 Stars
I was on the market for a good all around coat for Florida winter, something without heavy insulation but could keep the wind and rain at bay. I realized I wanted a drover coat, so I went to the only western store in town. They only had one in stock by Outback, so I tried it on and found that I liked it. However, I didn't like the price tag. So with a search on Amazon.com, I found the Down Under Oilskin Drover for fifty dollars cheaper and decided to trust it to chance. Eight reviews of five stars each was mighty tempting.
Down Under's oilskin drover doesn't have heavy duty snaps (in my opinion because they open too easily) or snapped cargo pockets (Found out the latter was on another drover made by Down Under that cost more), but it has all the same features as the Outback drover that would have cost me fifty dollars more. People on here said it does have a oily musky smell. I liken that smell to old military surplus items that one finds at a military surplus store. So that smell I usually smelled when handling say a an old duffel bag wasn't unique, but in fact a telltale sign that the item had been waterproofed some years prior.
I did follow the instructions by a reviewer and hung up the drover coat before hosing it down with the water hose. It killed the smell some, but it was still a powerful smell (My oilskin drover came in a bag which kept the waterproofing oil from evaporating). I then left it to dry overnight in the house, which probably accounts for why the smell was still there. Well yesterday I heard it was going to be a rainy day, but it looked like the rain was going to miss our part of town. Not a cloud in the sky. So I hung my oilskin drover outside to air out more. Wasn't half an hour later I heard the rain coming down hard. After the rain had ceased for the time being, I hurried up and took it off the line to let it drip dry in the house. Even without a person inside the coat, the only inside that got wet was around the collar and some streaks down the back of the inside cotton lining. I opened up the first of the double closure in front and found the part protected by the front closure to be dry. I then examined the inside and with the exception of the above, everything else was bone dry. That second unintentional washing did help cut down on the smell a lot and proved to me just how waterproof this thing really was.
The oilskin drover quickly dried to where it was just a bit of feel of moisture on the coat, so I took it out with me to different stores. The outside was cool from the rain. It was about 70° if I remember right. Wearing the oilskin drover wasn't too bad outside, but inside the heat quickly built up in the stores that I had to take off the oilskin drover because I was sweating in it. I still have yet to have any real testing of Florida winters since it is still November, but if my past jacket that wasn't lined that battled the winter is any indication, I should be warm in this thing. At least I know I can drive with it on.
My only complaint is the snaps not being heavy duty, and that even though I wear XL large clothes, it doesn't seem like the 2 XL is going to allow me to wear anything heavy underneath like a fleece lined shirt. I wanted a 3XL but they didn't have them for sale on this listing. Down Under Saddle Supply does have a 3 XL Oilskin Drover in their catalog which they gave me as a complimentary item in my order, but for the price, Amazon.com was selling the 2XL for twenty dollars cheaper from the same manufacturer. Plus the sleeves on the 2XL was plenty enough for me as I am five foot six, and I believe my arms are only nineteen inches long. A 3XL would have swallowed my whole arm.
