I bought these thermals for my 6 and 8 year old children. My daughter normally wears a size 6, so I bought her small. My son wears a size 10, so he got medium. They fit well, not too tight and not too loose.
It was a great buy. The thermals are more substantial than the waffle weave variety found in children's pajamas. They are thin enough to go under their clothing but yet substantial enough to keep them warm. And yes, they are so soft.
Living in Southern California, everyone laughs when I complain about our bad weather; but when one is used to sunshine, anything below 70 feels cold. Today was the first bad weather day of the season (40's/50's with rain). I sent them off to school layered with their new thermals and they reported back that they were nice and toasty all day.
My son will go off to camp in the snow soon. I will add more layers and hopefully, these thermals will be good enough for that, too.
