I travel to Guatemala several times a year as part of a mission team from my church. We work in a rather remote village, and so I need a bag in which I can carry everything I might need in a day; food, water, first aid, basic tools, etc.
This bag is perfect! The main compartment is vinyl lined and zips shut, two features that are not in the description or the other two reviews. Given the fact that it rains in Guatemala 6 months out of the year, the extra water resistance will be a definite plus. In the back of the main compartment is a smaller zip pocket which was also not mentioned, and which is a feature of the bag that I'm retiring. The small pocket is perfect for keeping money and passport safe but at hand.
The two front pockets are very roomy for their size and will be excellent for keeping first aid and electronics (i.e. the flip video and a digital camera) separate from the bulk compartment and also easily accessible.
The side pockets will hold a water bottle each (which was mentioned in a previous review, and incidentally is the feature which made my decision for this bag.) What was not mentioned about the side pockets is that they snap closed, and that the inner snap is located in a thumb loop at the top of the pocket. Slide your thumb into the loop and snap the pocket shut with one hand. Very cool. I don't know if you've ever fussed with snapping a pocket shut on a canvas bag, but it can be terribly frustrating. This one hand snap has been added to my list of "things a messenger bag must have."
The flap is enormous and covers the main and front pockets completely. There are no pockets in the flap.
Last is the slash pocket on the back. Hook and loop closure, probably good for papers or the train ticket mentioned in one of the other reviews. I doubt I use it in Guatemala, but I can see its usefulness in numerous other situations.
