Customer Review: Grantwood Tuneband wins hands down

I got the new model of the Grantwood Tuneband for iPhone 3G as well as a more expensive competing product, and tried out both, in day by day use, for a week each.
No contest. The simpler and much less expensive Tuneband wins hands down.
I had chosen the other product as well because the photo made the elegant case seem quite chic. In real life, however, it comes off looking pseudo-chic (i.e., trashy) after a while.
Some people have criticized the Tuneband because it is just a simple black neoprene case -- but that's the point: true elegance IS simplicity. With the Tuneband, it's almost like wearing just your iPhone on your wrist or arm.
In addition the other product has a transparent screen built into the case (to protect against scratches or the rain), which sounds like a good idea but in practice creates glare that makes the screen harder to read. Grantwood opted for the simpler solution: they give you a sticky transparent film that you place over the iPhone screen. Once done you don't even see it any more and touch sensitivity is like with the original screen. No scratches and the snug fit in the neoprene case should be sufficient protection from the rain (although here in Rome it hardly ever rains and so I haven't tested this feature.)
Finally, with their new "updated design", Grantwood has reinforced the back of the case making it thicker -- that, together with the wider wrist band they now furnish, eliminates almost all of the jiggling that some people complained about before. The rival product jiggles very little as well, but only at the price of tightening the wrist band to the point of making it feel slightly uncomfortable.
So, as I said, all in all there's no contest. The Grantwood Tuneband shows that you can get a lot more and pay a lot less by choosing the simpler (but better engineered) product.

I'm going to give this 4 stars rather then 3 stars, mainly because amazon views 3 stars as "critical." It's not amazing, but it's functional and solves the problem (which would normally win 3 stars from me anywhere but on amazon).
So, what are you buying? A bit of formed rubber and a Velcro strap. I've used it at the gym for the past couple weeks, and it does the job I bought it for. My iphone stays in place while both doing weights and running on the treadmill. Which is a fair success since I'm a geek who is working out for the first time in my life and my arms are pencil thin at this point.
That's not to say there aren't a few annoyances. The chief one, for me, deals with the case. The rubber goes so far up that it interferes with pressing buttons that come up at the bottom of the screen (such as Playlist, Podcast, etc). However, I'm going to guess this was done to keep the phone in the case while working out. It's a trade off I'm willing to live with.
Summary: It meets the basic requirements I bought it for.
Update (3/17/2010): Having lost this one for a time and tried another company's model (one made of cloth with a plastic screen over the front), I now feel this one fully deserves the 5 stars others have given it. I felt the other band took in too much sweat and held that sweat close to the phone, this one doesn't have take problem. This one is easy to put the phone into, the other one it was more difficult. This ones band has functioned well and has adapted well to changes in my arms and has room for more, the other's band was getting tight on my arms (which while not as thin as they where are still what I'd call below average).

I got this arm band in pink for my wife who loves running on our treadmill. She loves it! She just needed the small arm band that came with the product, even though the extended arm band came with it too. It keeps the phone securely attached to her arm and she says it's very comfortable...doesn't even know it's there anymore when she runs. Before the arm band, she would place her iPhone on the console lip of the treadmill, and end up hitting the ear bud wire with her hands as they were pumping back and forth and send the phone flying! Not anymore. This product does everything it says it will and is perfect for anyone wanting an arm band for their iPhone.
I would highly recommend this product to anyone wanting an arm band for their iPhone. The best part about this purchase was Grantwood Technology's customer service. I had read other reviews where the owner of the company would try and resolve any issues a customer had with the product. This was impressive. I don't know many owners who would do that. After reading through some of the reviews and seeing that a handful of people needed the extended length arm band, I called and asked them for the longer arm band strap after I placed my order. Their staff got back to me almost immediately (within 1 hour) letting me know the extended length arm band would be shipped with my order. I am more than pleased with the overall experience I've had with Grantwood Technology and I'd buy a product from them again should the need ever come up again...even if they are probably buckeye fans. Oh well...nobody's perfect! HAHAHAHAHAHA.

Customer Review: Best of Four I've Tried

I have purchased four different iPhone cases and have again returned to the TuneBand.
My first TuneBand endured three years of rugged use while mountain unicycling. (Yes you read that correctly.) I might fall, but the case held the iPhone securely every time. The wide band was comfortable and the phone easy to remove. Over the months of daily use, I eventually ripped the case enough so that it was worth replacing, not wanting to risk the phone.
I bought an imitator. The fit was loose; the skinny arm band had diminished holding power. In my first ride, my phone went shooting out of the imitator's case. Thankfully, I was on clay at the time. I gave that case away... with a warning to the "lucky" recipient.
I'm a slow learner: I bought ANOTHER imitator. (Should you trust the opinion of somebody so slow?) With Imitator 2.0, I couldn't access the volume buttons or even some of the screen. I gave that away, too. I'll let the new owner deal with the frustrations.
I just purchased my SECOND TuneBand and will never, never stray. The new version of the case is even beefier, though I'd like to see some reinforcing around the bottom button in the next revision.
The folks who run this company are just nice, honest, real people. I will be back to support them again and again. If you are considering an imitator from some auction site, save yourself time and money. Buy quality the first time from nice people.

I have spent tons of money on iphone (1st Gen) accessories, but what I use most is the armband. Whether jogging, working on the computer or cleaning house, I listen to books and music almost every day. I lost my original armband, but it sagged anyway and you had to slip the phone into a case/armband combo. It was VERY hard to work the controls. I ordered the Tuneband Armband and case because of the 100% guarantee. Very very pleased with the band and the separate case - quite functional and not the least bit "bulky" feeling. Great product. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the band does not "sag" after use as well but it feels as though it is stronger.
More importantly, the service was outstanding. I live in the country and my address has been changed for 911 purposes 3 times. When the reps from Grantwood used their USPS software, a different address was given. They contacted me via email to ensure they had the right address and then confirmed again before shipping. Also received a follow-up to ensure I had received the product. How refreshing! In this day of electronic service, I really appreciated the personal touch. Thanks to Heather and Sean!
