Apparel reviews of Modern Culture Boys 8-20 Modern Culture Basic Thermal ShirtCustomer Review: Not 100% cotton and not as pictured Rating: 3 Stars
Got two of these shirts on a Lightning Deal and probably will send both back. First off these are labeled as a cotton/polyester blend -- NOT 100% cotton as the Amazon page says.
Visually, something you notice immediately in the charcoal color is a contrasting white strip of cloth sewn inside the neckline. Presumably you would not see it when wearing it, but it's jarring to look at when you're not expecting it.
On closer inspection I think it is intended to tack down an unhemmed edge of cloth around the neck, which I deduce because the oatmeal color has no such strip, leaving uncovered a hem there that looks like it will fray over time. Either way is not optimal. The extra strip adds to the layers of cloth and seams around the neckline, which one might expect to create a potential comfort issue.
If that were not enough to make the shirt uncomfortable, the huge label probably would be. On the charcoal it is like a traditional shirt label, hemmed and tacked at the top. On the oatmeal it is just a huge piece of cloth with loose scraggly edges not hemmed cleanly. As you can tell, the label appearance and size on the oatmeal color is different from that of the charcoal. Again, why? Both are marked "Made in Pakistan" but apparently not using the same patterns or designs.
We got one of each in a size that should be slightly big for our kid, with the expectation that 100% cotton would shrink in the laundry to be just right to start -- and finish -- the winter season just about to kick in. Instead they are a full size too big and unlikely to shrink as much because of the polyester mix.
If one overlooked all the other stuff, a different customer might be pleased that the sizing is "generous" (i.e. accurate to the upper range of measurements on the chart here) and (presumably) likely to stay that way. And the fabric feels good coming out of the package brand new.
For those reasons I think three stars is reasonable, because maybe somebody else might like them more than I do. But when you're buying any clothing, and especially an undergarment, I think the inaccurate listing of fabric content is a pretty big deal. And you should be able to expect that two shirts of different colors would be have the same construction, and look like the product photos.
Hope this is helpful to other shoppers.
