I started to use this bag when I did some solo travel, but didn't want to pack a super full suitcase. I roll my clothes (which makes them fit better) and there is still room to expand when I buy new stuff.
The backpack straps are comfy and I've been able to haul this carry on with me long walking distances, even with the weight above 25 pounds. I have also stuff this backpack silly, close to the airline weight limit for checked luggage, and my items have stayed protected in the process.
Now that I'm no longer a solo traveler, we normally pack this in our checked baggage, and fill it with our clothes for the return trip and pack the other odd shaped items in our other bag. My husband and I still take this with us for short weekend trips and I'm still able to handle it halfway through my pregnancy.

I have this bag in merlot and it has been everywhere with me. It has packed well for all occasions--Hawaii, Chicago, hiking in the Alps, back roads in Portugal, all over the UK. I even packed this badboy when I moved from the US to Europe. It's holds a lot of stuff (I tend to bring too many shoes when I go somewhere), yet it is compact enough to take as a carry-on. I have always been able to fit what I need to in this...even when I think there's no more room. The internal compartment, tie-down clips, and external pockets are great, and I love the way the backpack straps can be hidden inside the back panel when you don't want them getting caught.
Despite having been everywhere with me, this bag still looks like new. I wouldn't travel with any other bag, and I highly recommend it to everyone who travels.

I just received it and am impressed already. The Blue Spruce color is much nicer than the picture on here, deeper blue and classy. It came with the shoulder strap which I didn't expect because most places say it must be bought separately. The shoulder/waist straps seem to adjust well to my average female 5'6" body and my breasts don't feel squished. Lots of pockets in various sizes and the included secret pouch and mesh pouches will also come in handy. So far, so good!Customer Review: A Great Travel Bag!

Rick Steves Convertible Carryon Bag is the best bag I've found. Steves knows how to design bags for people who travel for a living. Given the current reality of the airline industry, people will want to learn how to travel light. This bag is the one to use. This carry on is the best pack I have every used. Very well designed. I can fit everything I need for two weeks at a time and I do not find it difficult to carry using it as a back pack. I have also used for short trips and the interior straps work brilliantly at keep everything in place! Take a chance on it. I think you will be as pleased as I am.
