I have not traveled with this yet, but I already know I want to keep it. I've done a good amount of traveling, and now I wish that I had this bag the whole time. It's a great size, has good organization, and the backpack/shoulder strap convertibility is great and very well designed. It is actually bigger than I expected - like everyone else you see at the airport, you will be literally at the carry-on limit, and on certain airplanes may still have to check your bag. The advantage of flying with a slightly smaller bag is that you really never have to check it.
I do have a couple of concerns, though. Perhaps it's my fault for not buying the non-convertible version, but I fail to see the purpose of having this convert to a slightly bigger size. The point was to have it be the maximum carry-on size... if you stuff it full of so much stuff you need to zip open the expanded area, you'll likely be stuck checking the bag. Worst case, think of it this way - you almost fill up the bag full of stuff for your month-long European backpacking trip. While there, you buy all kinds of souvenirs. It's so tempting to expand your pack to fit more souvenirs in... the airline won't notice... you pop it open, and stuff it to the gills with gifts for your relatives. You get to the airport in Austria late and whoops, your bag is too big, we'll have to check it. You miss your connecting flight in Paris, and never see your bag again!
A better idea is to leave room in the bag before you leave for additional stuff you will gather along the way, and by keeping the bag at a specific size, you can't be tempted to open it up to shove more stuff in.
I'm sure it's useful for some purposes, but really I wish I had gotten the other version. Oh well, still a great bag.
My only other complaint is that Rick Steves' signature is embroidered fairly largely on the front. Part of the purpose of this bag is certainly to not be flashy, but this kind of defeats that. It adds a bit of unnecessary flash, and I suspect will make people think my name is Rick Steves. I plan to cover this up with a strip of black fabric, or something.

The Carry-On was great quality and the more we used it, the better we liked it. It worked best using the cubes, as they helped keep everything in place. If you want the flexability of being able to slip it on as a back pack and also be able to use it as a suitcase, I would highly recommend it.Customer Review: Not quie an MLC but a good bag for half the price

I was looking for a replacement for my old Patagonia MLC. The zippers are not quite as substantial (Zipper teeth are about 1/2 the size on this bag. Not sure if the current MLC zippers are as big) and the shoulder straps have less padding. The handles have a lot of padding and are nice to hold. There is mesh on the side that contacts your back - comfortable and less sweaty.
The lower front pocket holds my 12" Power Book in a sleeve with a slight bit of room left. Other than the upper pocket, there are two more full-length pockets behind that. One opens at the top and one at the side. Carrying the bag vertically, things tend to slide toward the bottom and can be hard to access since the pockets overlap each other. The internal (main compartment) and external compression straps help to keep things in place.

I actually purchased a LL BEAN Rucksack and waited for it to arrive before I even opened the package for this. The ruck sack was too small. I am traveling with a 2 year old to Hawaii and will need to carry her things as well as mine. When I opened the Rick STeves I was immediately impressed. I thought it was going to be big and bulky...NOT! THe pockets on the outside are soooooooooooooo deep and roomy and the inside is great, OMG!! It will accomodate everything I need and then some, there are so many pockets. It fits comfortably on my back and the waist belt really secures it comfortably. I will have no problem finding things and manuevering around the airport with a toddler and her stroller.
THis bag is awesome. It came with 2 small white mesh bags and 3 of Rick STeves' cubes...I am very impressed with this product. THe merlot is also a very pretty color.

I ordered this bag for a weeklong trip to California. I was skeptical that I, usually a fairly `heavy packer' could possibly live out of one carryon for an entire week. I followed the packing and folding directions from www.onebag.com and was amazed at how much fit into this bag! When I arrived I unpacked to find my clothes were almost completely wrinkle free. I can recommend this bag as well as the www.onebag.com web site.
