Apparel reviews of Rick Steves Silk Neck WalletCustomer Review: Could not have lived without it! Rating: 4 Stars
We went to Prague and my mother bought two of these for us right before we left. I was concerned by the reviews so when they arrived I turned it inside out and went over the cord several times with a needle and thread. Because we were carrying our plane tickets, passports, cash, credit cards, ID, and basically anything of importance I bought two lenths of tan ribbon and made an additional "safety net" cord on each. The original cord is only held in place by one thread so that should definitely be improved upon.
We had no problems with the zippers, although the pulls are a little small, but noticed some minor fraying (nothing anyone would notice) as we were returning.
We spent 7 full days in Prague and two days flying. These things made life so much easier. No purse, no wallet, no thefts. I wore it under my clothes once and then wore it slung over one shoulder diagonally across my front the rest. This way there was no play in the cord and wearing it backwards (zippers facing the body) make it practically impossible for someone to touch it without me knowing. There is an outside, open pocket on the back but it is really deep. Still I would only keep things of minor value in there like coins. The small pockets on front at the bottom were perfect for credit cards and business cards of people we met and wanted to reach. The large zip inside pocket has a plastic bag that comes with it. We don't know if it was supposed to stay in or not but we used it for tickets and passports in case we got caught in the rain or whatever to keep it dry.
There are others out there but I can only say that this little slip of silk helped my time in the Czech Republic so much easier. If the little flaws were tweaked it would warrant a full 5 stars.
Customer Review: Feel "safe" Rating: 4 Stars
When you travel, it is great to have a safe place for your passport, credit cards, tickets and big bills. Rick's neck wallet did a nice job. There were some complaints about how the cord was attached and while I didn't see that as a problem, to be sure, I had a few extra stitches thrown in. Even though the wallet has a plastic liner on one side, papers can still get wet, so it helps to put them in baggies. It was also easy to get the neck wallet out when a ticket or more $$ was needed. I found the neck wallet easier to use than the money belt I have used in the past. It is definitely worth it to spend a few bucks for peace of mind and this neck wallet did the job.

This item worked well on our trip. It has handy pockets for a passport, tickets, money, & credit cards. It has an adjustable neck strap. It is slim, lightweight & washable. It can be worn on the inside or outside of a shirt.

bought for our trip to ireland the neck wallet was worn under my shirt and around my neck. it easily held our passports, euro's and flight info. the thin strap was the only downside. it started to annoy me after a few days. overall, not bad.
Customer Review: Poor design - better ones out there Rating: 2 Stars
I just got back from a 1 month trip to Europe with the Rick Steves neck wallet. I should have taken my old one - heavier, but much more functional. Here are the deficiencies I see in the Rick Steves product:
- The two front pockets are too small. Credit cards are a tight squeeze, making them hard to get in and out. Neither of the pockets are large enough for money unless you fold the bills in thirds. The pockets do not have separate zippers.
-The main zippered compartment contains a clear plastic pouch designed to protect the contents from perspiration, since the silk sucks up moisture like a sponge. Unfortunately, this plastic pouch sticks to itself and gets bent and crumpled, making it hard to get things in and out.
-The above main compartment is too narrow to hold a passport (at least a U.S. passport) sideways. You must put it in vertically, which precludes folding the wallet in half and using it as a much more convenient pocket wallet in places where it is safe to do so.
-The strap does not detach, also preventing its use as a pocket wallet as above, or as an around-the-waist under the pants money belt.
- The un-zippered back compartment is nearly useless. It is between you and the plastic pouch, and anything put in here will get soaked with perspiration.
About its only plus is that it is light weight, but I'd gladly trade a few ounces for more functionality. Look for one that is moisture proof, has secure pockets that actually fit credit cards, a passport and the larger European bills, and can be used as a regular wallet.
